SUGGESTED ITINERARY Day 1 Depart from your local pick up point and travel to your base in Belgium, making comfort stops en-route, dinner included. Day 2 A full day excursion to Valkenburg. The town is dominated by the Roman fortress, which overlooks the town and is well worth a visit. Valkenburg dates back to the Roman times when the soft limestone was excavated by slaves and transported hundreds of miles back to build Rome. These 250km of caves can be visited and there is even a miniature train ride (not included) which takes you through this underground labyrinth. The centre of the town is completely pedestrianised and you will be able to spend the day exploring at your leisure. Day 3 Today we travel to Roermond in southern Holland where you will have some free time in the town as well as an optoinal 70 minute boat cruise on the 'Maasplassen'. Due to its impressive architecture and charming skyline, Roermond town centre has been designated as a conservation area. Through the centuries the town has filled the role of commercial centre, principal town in the duchy of Guelders and since 1559 it has served as the seat of the bishop. In addition to important churches, the town centre boasts many listed buildings and monuments. The skyline of the historic town is dominated by the towers of two churches: St. Christopher Cathedral and Munster Church. We also include a visit to the Gitstaper Watermill followed by a horse and cart ride of about 90 minutes through the picturesque woodland and countryside of the National Park, De Meinweg in Limburg. Return to the hotel for dinner. Day 4 Included full day in Hasselt with a visit to the National Jenever museum (the national drink) with a tour and tasting, followed by a guided city tour by tram. Hasselt is the capital of the Belgian province of Limburg. Hasselt has a very contemporary demeanour, the central "Grote Markt" may not be that big, but the friendly atmosphere around the cosy terraces and the numerous sidewalk cafés on the square, certainly make up for the lack of "grandeur" that typifies the Belgian Market Square in cities such as Brussels and Antwerp. A famous flavoured Gin, spiced with juniper berries and called "Jenever", is made in Hasselt; there are several factories, and a museum dedicated to its history. A very charming tourist attraction is the beautiful Japanese Garden on the outskirts of the city. Not far from Hasselt lies also the magnificent Open Air Museum of Bokrijk, dedicated to Flemish rural architecture of the past and the Flemish country life. Throughout the sumer months you can step into the past, literally and figuratively, in the Open Air Museum. More than 100 historic buildings, rebuilt in their original condition, await you. Even the furniture, the farming tools and the household goods are authentic... however, the Open Air Museum lives. In Bokrijk, life takes its course; it follows nature’s rhythm. The morning sun pierces through the lush green foliage and conjures up a colourful light show on the Kempen square. The church bells ring and the windmill starts up slowly. The priest gets ready for a fire-and-brimstone sermon. And while the farmer and his wife warm themselves at the fire, the village constable patrols the village with a vigilant expression. The delicious scent of freshly baked bread at the local bakery delays the children on the way to school. Day 5 Included stop en-route home in the historic city of Leuven where you will find one of the most beautiful medieval buildings in the world, the magnificent 15th century town hall of the city! The city centre looks like a very well preserved town with buildings from the 17th and 18th century, however this is due to the reconstruction of the old city as the centre was almost completely destroyed during the First World War. Belgians will always associate the city with one of the most famous and popular lager beer brands in Belgium : STELLA ARTOIS, which is brewed just outside of the city. You will have several hours at your leisure here and can purchase lunch, before we continue onto Calais for your return ferry crossing to the UK, arriving home later this evening.
