A full day excursion with a local guide to the town of Perugia which stands proudly above the Tiber, and then onto Gubbio accompanied by your guide. This is a typical Umbrian hill town which has kept its medieval character. The ancient town of Gubbio is picturesquely located in the Umbrian hills and is typical of the hill towns of this area, with its stone buildings and ancient noblemen’s houses. Below the city walls is a well-preserved Roman Theatre, dating from the time of the Emperor Augustus, which is still used for open-air performances in the summer months. A mong Gubbio’s many historic churches are the 12th-century Cathedral, the Convent of St Marziale, built on the site of a Roman Temple, and the Basilica of St Ubaldo, housing the relics of Gubbio’s patron saint.A half day guided excursion to Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis, Italy’s best-loved saint. Perugia, of Etruscan origin, is an important University town and is still surrounded by massive ramparts. These contain original Etruscan stonework, with Roman and Renaissance additions. The town centre is a maze of picturesque medieval streets, which you will explore with a local guide. Today the town is important for chocolate making. Assisi, one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations in Italy, is important for its associations with St Francis, who lived and preached there. The Basilica of St Francis, which is divided into upper and lower levels, contains important works by Giotto and Lorenzetti. Despite the influx of visitors, Assisi remains a place of great peace and tranquility. A half day guided walking tour of Spoleto. In the green heart of Italy, Spoleto i s an enchanting destination. Founded in 1000 BC, it sits at the foot of Monteluco and is dominated by the imposing Rocca, a medieval fortress. Famous for its annual Festival of Two Worlds, one of Europe's leading art and music festivals, its charm is unrivalled, even in Umbria. Filled with ancient architecture, its notable sights include its 12th century cathedral and piazza, and the magnificent 14th century Bridge of Towers, a gigantic aqueduct built to carry water from the hill above the town.A guided excursion to Todi, which sits on a hill right in the middle of the Tiber Valley. Todi was once described as the most liveable city in the world. Quite what that means is open to interpretation but it is certainly a fascinating place with its position being a very strategic one. However its castle walls were never breached and there are three eccen tric rings of walls, one inside another, which probably accounts for this. We then continue onto Orvieto with our guide which is perched on a plateau of tufa rock, with the outline of its world famous Duomo visible for miles around. The city of Orvieto has adapted to the needs of the modern day tourist by transforming itself into a car-free haven. Access to the city in fact is either via the funicular that runs from the railway station below up to the old town centre, passing directly by the Albornoz fortress, or up the system of escalators dug into the cliffside. You will have the opportunity of tasting the Orvieto Classico wine and should you wish to include a vineyard visit, this could be arranged, payable locally. Included last day in Rome with a guided tour by coach. This tour departs after you check out of your hotel and does not include entrances into any places that the guided coach tour visits. You will also have free time in the city after this tour before returning to the airport for the flight to the UK.
