You will have some time to explore the city centre, relax and perhaps have lunch in one of the many cafe’s/ restaurants before we continue on to Vianden where you will have time to freshen up before dinner. Day 2. After a leisurely breakfast you have some free time in Vianden where you might choose to visit the spectacular castle. Vianden has a rich history dating back many centuries and the castle, which was constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries is built on the foundations of a Roman 'Castellum' and a Carolingian refuge. It is one of the largest and most beautiful feudal residences of the Romanesque and gothic periods in Europe. Until the beginning of the 15th century it was the seat of the influential counts of Vianden who could boas t their close connections to the Royal Family of France and the German Imperial court. Fully restored in 1977 Vianden Castle remains one of the most important castles in Europe. You could also choose to have stroll along the bank of the river, visit Victor Hugo’s house or for the brave, there is a chair lift over the gorge. After time in Vianden you will travel to Clervaux, which is accessed by a scenic journey through the Ardennes. Clervaux chateau houses the "Family of Man" photographic museum, which is "the biggest photography exhibition of all time". An American photographer, born in Luxembourg, Edward Steichen, started in 1951 in the middle of the cold war, to prepare his greatest project of his exhibition from ‘man to man’ through the unique language of photography. The exhibition is composed of 37 themes, with impressive collections about the love of the faith in the human being, from birth, the labour, the family, education & children to war and peace. Entrance to the museum is included. After your visit you will have some time for lunch in the pretty town before returning to Vianden. Day 3. Luxembourg city is your destination this morning, which was inducted into UNESCO on the ‘World Heritage List’ in 1994. For centuries the city was one of the strongest fortresses in Europe and many of the relics have remained intact. A guided tour of the city is included that will involve a coach journey around the sights and places of interest as well as a walking tour of the heart of the city. You will have some free time in the city to do a little shopping and get some lunch before your included guided tour of the Military History Museum. This museum is one of the best military museums in Europe. Dedicated to the what has become known as the ‘Battle of the Bulge, the museum was founded, funded and still operated by local people who have an interest in the battle. Over the years equipment has been found in the fields and forests and restored and pictures, diaries and uniforms along with factual documents have been donated by soldiers from both sides of the conflict. Actual battles have been recreated in life size that have received meticulous attention to detail. Day 4. Your first stop today is Trier, which is Germany’s oldest settlement dating back to Roman times. It began around a wooden bridge from 18 B.C. at the site of a ford used by the Celtic Treveri and soon occupied the wide valley with an extensive grid pattern of streets on the site of sporadic Celtic settlements. Trier was one of the three Roman capitals of the western world alongside York and Milan. From these inauspicious beginnings Trier has survived through many wars and turmoil and remains one of the prettiest cities in Germany. The remains of the Roman city gate, the Porta Nigra can still be seen along with vestiges of the many occupations throughout the ages. You will have time to explore the city & have some lunch before continuing to Grevenmacher where the world famous Bernard Massard wine cellars can be found. On arrival you will have a tour of the distillery to see intricate process that takes place in order for them to produce some of the finest European wines. You will of course be able to sample some of the produce before you depart and board the Moselle river cruiser, which takes you past some beautiful scenery before you return to the hotel in time for you to freshen up before dinner. Day 5 En-route home you will visit Durbuy , which is known as the ‘smallest town on earth’ and it is also quite possibly one of the prettiest, with a castle, narrow cobbled streets and has one on the worlds most abundant Topiary Gardens (entrance not included). You will have time to explore and have some lunch (not included) before you travel on to Calais and return to your original departure point. PRICE & SUPPLEMENTS
