SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Day 1 - Departing this morning we travel to the coast for the
short channel ferry crossing to Calais.
A stop will be made in the historical town of Tournai,
a 2000 year old town which is steeped in history. Nowadays Tournai is the
tourist and cultural capital of its region and is overshadowed by its
monuments, precious traces of years of history and is known as the Cité des
Cinq Clochers (the town of the five towers). You will
have a little free time
here to explore at your leisure, maybe visit the stunning Basilica in the Grand Place before
we continue into the Walloon region of Belgium and La Roche-en-Ardenne,
where you will be based for 3 nights. Having freshened up you will enjoy dinner
at the hotel this evening.
Day 2 – Today is a leisurely
day with most of it being spent in La
Roche-en-Ardenne, which nestles in a leafy setting on the banks of the
River Ourthe, and is a 'Jewel of the Ardenne' and which has a fascinating past -
a wealth of history & legends. It has a very good museum relating to the Battle of the Bulge when
there was fierce fighting in the Ardennes Offensive in December 1944 which
destroyed 90% of the town, injuring many and killing 114 inhabitants and this
museum tells a very personal story relating to the inhabitants of the town at
this time. We include a visit to Gres
de La Roche where you will learn about the history of the La Roche
stoneware. From the earth to the table, discover the uses of stoneware through
the centuries in a modern display. Experience
the ancient techniques, the sensations, emotions and odours which marked the
lives of the baker, the butcher, the apothecary, the monks - and also the lords
of La Roche and their serfs. The interior of this unusual museum has been
totally reconstructed and will take your breath away. Visit the unique Potter's workshop, with holographic
projections and don't miss the opportunity of buying some of the produce and
seeing the interactive presentation about Ardenne ham. During he day, you may
also choose to take an electric train around the town (small extra charge).
This afternoon we include a 50 minute ride on the Tramway Touristique of the Aisne which offers you a tramway ride
like the ones our families might
have taken in the 19th century where you will
ride in either open or closed carriages, depending on the weather. At the
departure point at the Pont d'Erezée, there is a modern reception point and a
small museum on the 1st floor which you can visit. The tramway follows the
Aisne river so that its passengers can admire and relax amongst the ‘authentic
nature’ of the Ardennes. Also today, we
include a visit to an Artisan Chocolate
maker, Defroidmont where the manufacturing is done completely with
respect for tradition and with products of the highest quality and 100% cocoa
butter. You will get to see the whole chocolate making process and of course
you will be able to taste and purchase products here also. We return you to the
hotel where your evening meal is included.
Day 3 – Today we start the day
by visiting the stunning Annevoie
Palace & Gardens. The
Palace was constructed in the 1620’s and
was heavily modified in 1775 when the
spectacular water gardens were established. The gardens feature over twenty
ornamental ponds and lakes fed by approximately fifty water jets and
waterfalls, and are widely regarded as some of the best, not only in Belgium,
but also in the whole of Europe. You will have a guided tour here and can also
purchase lunch before we continue on to Dinant, a pretty town situated
on the banks of the Meuse river. Here, we
include a short river cruise, a leisurely way to see the city after which, you
will have some free time to maybe visit the Citadelle or explore the town,
which is the birthplace of Adolph Sax, the inventor of the Saxophone. We return
to La Roche later in the day and dinner is included tonight.
Day 4 – Departing the hotel after breakfast, we
re-trace our steps through the provinces of the Ardennes to the Hainaut region, where we will finish your Belgian
experience in a unique way. Arriving at the Giant Strepy-Thieu boatlift, located on the Canal du Centre
and which is also the world's highest "lock" at 238 feet where you
will board an electric tourist train which will take you upstream, to
the
boarding point for your cruise. You will travel to lift No. 1 and these
old-fashioned boat lifts are classified as a World Heritage Site and are the
only ones in the world still in use and which are able to compensate for a
change in water level of about 17m through a single source of energy : water !
You will be served with a light lunch on board before we pass through
the ‘Funicular Lift’ where this exceptional structure compensates for a
difference in level of 73.15m and so is on its own, equivalent to the four
original hydraulic lifts. Disembarking mid afternoon, we continue on to Calais for your return crossing to the UK early
evening and then onward to your original departure point.

SAMPLE ITINERARY
Day 1 – Departing this morning,
our journey takes us towards the historic city of Cambridge, home of the famous University, carols in King's College
Chapel and punting on the river Cam. Cambridge
is a compact cosmopolitan city with outstanding architecture both old and new
& the beauty of its ancient centre is preserved with its walkable medieval
streets, college courts, gardens and bridges. This city is a delight to visit
in any season: relax in its many pubs, restaurants and cafes or explore the
i
ndependent shops around the historic market place. Departing here we continue
onto Kings Lynn where having
checked in, you will have an early dinner before we depart for your included evening performance of the Thursford Christmas Spectacular with pre booked
tickets. You will be returned to the hotel later this evening.
Day 2 - Today you will have
some free time in the historic medieval port of King's Lynn.
The town is now a treasure trove for history lovers with narrow streets and
handsome merchant houses in the old town, the only surviving Hanseatic
warehouse in the country and plenty of fascinating visitor attractions to help
bring the olden days alive.
We then depart, retracing our steps making a lunch stop en route in Thetford, as we follow the Dad's Army Trail. Written by Jimmy
Perry and David Croft. 'Dad's Army' started in 1967 and Thetford was chosen
because
the BBC had obtained permission to film at a Stanford Practical
Training area. Apart from the occasional bomb going off or overhead jet
aircraft, filming could go ahead undisturbed. The stars would come to Thetford
for six weeks at a time, staying in the Bell
and Anchor Hotels. This was usually in April or May each year until the last
series in 1977. The very first scene from the first episode 'The Man and the
Hour' was filmed inside the Anchor Hotel, in the 'Norvic Room', which is now a
dining area. Here you will be given a 90
minute guided tour of the town finishing at the Bell hotel, for an included lunch before continuing our journey homeward, arriving
back at your original departure point(s) later in the day.

SAMPLE ITINERARY
Day 1 - Departing
your area, we travel south for the short channel crossing to France this
morning. We will make a stop en route in Os
tende for you to purchase lunch
before continuing onward towards Amsterdam
arriving later today, where you board the MV Virgina. The boat is moored
in Amsterdam
tonight and after dinner you are free to explore the city at your leisure,
should you choose to do so.
Day 2 - The boat
departs Amsterdam at 8am and travels leisurely north
towards the traditional fishing village
of Volendam. Legend has it that the Volendam coat of arms is a compliment to the beauty
of the Volendam girls ! As a result of its completely insulated location, this
village has preserved its character for six centuries and also because of the
stubborness and lifestyle of the local fishermen. The characteristic small
houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form
the most
picturesque spots, present the visitor with an atmosphere of geniality and
romance. We will take you to Simonhoeve this afternoon where the staff are dressed
in national costune. They will
explain how the famous Dutch cheese is made and afterwards you
can visit the big clog where you can see how wooden hand carved shoes are made.
You will get to taste some of the traditional
farmhouse cheeses and as cheese and wine go together, there is
a glass of Dutch fruit wine for everyone. You
will return to the ship for dinner on board this evening.
Day 3 – Departing
Volendam you cruise back to Amsterdam
where lunch will be taken on board. This afternoon you are free to explore the
city of Amsterdam , maybe visiting the famous
Singel canal and its flower market, Dam
Palace or the Rijks Museum
(extra cost) or explore the shopping street (Kalver Straat) where many bargains
can be found. Anne Frank's house is often on the list of places to visit (steep
stairs) or you can just soak in the atmosphere of the city in one of the many
street cafes that line the squares and streets. This evening you will enjoy an
included three-course meal onboard the vessel - a great way to end a memorable
day. A pre-bookable optional 2 hour candle-light canal cruise of Amsterdam is available
this evening which includes cheese and wine on board (extra cost). This
is an excellent opportunity of experiencing the city's sights for yourself and
comes highly recommended.
Day 4. After
breakfast it is time to disembark the vessel as we travel south by coach to the
famous Keukenhof
Gardens for your included
visit. Set in 77 acres of wooded parkland, Keukenhof is one of the world's most
spectacular flower gardens. Established in 1949 as a showcase for Dutch
bulb-growers, every spring more
than seven million buds reach to the sky. The
growers compete for the most imaginative display, interplanting species for
effect. The impact on the eye and nose of overwhelming colour and scent is an
unforgettable experience. Japanese cherry trees, azaleas and rhododendrons
flower behind the rows of spring bulbs and displays are regularly refreshed
with new plantings to ensure a consistently dazzling array. Dramatic
competitive flower arrangements are featured in conservatories which also
display large collections of orchids and more beds of flowers (useful retreats
if the weather is cool or wet). You will have the morning at your leisure here
before re-joining the coach early afternoon and travel onto Calais
for an early evening crossing back to the UK and then onwards to your
original departure points.
