THURSFORD HISTORY Twenty nine years ago against the background of steam engines, mechanical organs and fairground rides, a small Christmas show took place, with eight choral scholars from Kings College Cambridge, singing a selection of John Rutter carols. It has now grown into the largest Christmas show in England. The Christmas Spectacular is the ultimate musical experience and one of the most exciting Christmas shows ever conceived. It is a blend of entertainment, songs, carols, dancers in amazing costumes and singing from a cast of over one hundred. Each show is a pageant of colour and spectacle with seamless transition from up-beat dance routines to choral renditions and would not be out of place in London’s West End theatres. SAMPLE ITINERARY
Day 1 - An included stop with entrance & tour on the 1st day en route to your hotel, at the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight centre in Coningsby - where they operate a Lancaster, 5 Spitfires, 2 Hurricanes, 2 Chipmunks, and a Dakota. In 1986, under a unique arrangement between Lincolnshire County Council and the Royal Air Force, it became possible to view these historic aircraft at their base at RAF Coningsby. These aircraft are no museum pieces they are all still flying and can be seen at a variety of air shows in the summer months. Since 1986, the Visitor Centre has welcomed over 300,000 people, all of whom have received a guided tour. Many others visit to view the permanent gallery and temporary exhibitions, or to make purchases in the excellent shop. Day 2 - You have an included morning guided Lavendar & Legends Tour (predominantly by coach) including a visit to the 'Drying Barn & Distillery' followed by a cream tea. The afternoon is free in the historic medieval port of King's Lynn. The town is now a treasure trove for history lovers with narrow streets and handsome merchant houses in the old town, the only surviving Hanseatic warehouse in the country and plenty of fascinating visitor attractions to help bring the olden days alive. After an early dinner you will travel to Thursford for the spectacular performance. Day 3 - You have an included visit to the city of Ely where your first port of call for any visitor to Ely will almost certainly be the Cathedral. This imposing structure towers across the fens for miles around. Dominating the skyline, it is one of Englands most beautiful and largest Cathedrals. Known locally as the 'Ship of the Fens' it is famous for its unique Octagon tower, which when lit can be seen for tens of miles. The Cathedral is also home to the only national museum dedicated to Stained Glass If it's history you are interested in then Ely Museum, housed in the city's old gaol, is an excellent place to start. Ely's most famous historical resident was Oliver Cromwell and in 1636 he inherited a large estate from Sir Thomas Steward, his maternal uncle, who farmed about two miles outside Ely at Stuntney. He became to local tax collector, or 'Farmer of the Tithes', for the local parishes. It was up to Cromwell to ensure that all the local taxes - including money, wheat and straw - were delivered to the Dean of the Cathedral. He was permitted to keep any excess collected and soon became a man of property and quite considerable local status. The Cromwell family left sometime in 1647, but you can still visit their house, which now doubles as the local Tourist Information Centre. You will have a couple of hours at your leisure here and will be able to purchase lunch before we depart, arriving back later today.
